Gynecomastia, notoriously also known as “man boobs”, is the enlargement of the glandular tissue of male breast which occur during infancy or puberty generally amongst the developing boys and may also sometimes occur among middle-aged to older men. It can be caused due to various reasons like
a. Hormonal imbalance in the body, with a relative addition of estrogens or female hormone as compared to androgens or male hormones.
b. As an after effect of some medicinal treatments and drug abuse like marijuana.
c. May be caused due to certain medical conditions like chronic kidney failure, hyperthyroidism etc.
It’s a condition that is affecting more than one-third of the world’s total male population. However, it is neither a life-threatening condition nor can be a serious threat to one’s health. The actual threat it causes is on the men’s self-confidence and poise making them embarrassed of their own body and masculinity. The chief symptom is the enlargement of the breasts, which generally happens due to the excess growth of glandular tissue instead of fatty tissue. Typically, it occurs on both sides but in some cases, it can be seen in one side of the chest. Sometimes the growth may be greater on one side of the male chest. Even though there is no acute pain but in some cases inflammation and sensitivity may be observed.
Various Grades of Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia or the enlargement of breasts is not same in all males. It has been classified into 4 different levels or grades. It is important to know about the grade or the type of gynecomastia which helps the gynecomastia surgeon in determining the apt course of treatment. The grades are classified as 1,2,3 and 4, depending upon the size of the breast enlargement.
Grade 1: The smallest increase in size where there is a localized button of tissue concentrated around the area adjacent to the nipple or areola and is different in color from the rest of the tissues. The visibility is very slight.
Grade 2: The size of the male breast enlargement is moderate which exceeds the areola boundaries with edges similar to the rest of the chest. The visibility may be slight to high.
Grade 3: In this type, the male breast enlargement is bigger than type 2 and there is generally moderate enlargement that exceeds the areola boundaries with edges different from the rest of the chest and appearance of extra skin in the breast area. The visibility is high and it is visible.
Grade 4: In this type the feminization of the male breast area is maximum. There is a clear breast enlargement with excess skin and higher feminization. The visibility is extremely high and it marks a negative impact on the person’s mind.
Treatment
Even if somebody suffers from gynecomastia condition, there is nothing to worry. Don’t let it take away your confidence and charm. There are many treatment options available for treating it and getting that toned chest again. Each gynecomastia treatment has its own sets of advantages and disadvantages.
- Gynecomastia Shirts: These are the cheapest option for treating gynecomastia compared to other options but it does not provide one with an everlasting solution. One can witness the immediate effects by just paying a small amount.
- Gynecomastia Pills: Pills are another treatment for gynecomastia and are economical when compared to gynecomastia surgery. This treatment comes with no ache or stitches or scar and they are much more effective than shirts.
- Gynecomastia Surgery: This is one of the most effective treatments for getting rid of gynecomastia when nothing else like anti-estrogen supplements, dietary plans or gynecomastia pills works. Gynecomastia Surgery is a guaranteed treatment option for effectively reducing male breast enlargement as it removes excess breast tissue and gland.
There are many ways of performing Gynecomastia surgery depending upon the patient’s preference, the cost of the surgery, qualification, and expertise of the cosmetic surgeon. Some of the commonly used procedures for gynecomastia surgery are:
Liposuction: A procedure with which we all are familiar. A liposuction surgery is performed to remove the excess breast fat but the breast gland tissues are not removed.
Mastectomy: It is one of those Gynecomastia surgical procedures that involves the removal of the tissue under the breast. This surgery is generally done with the help of endoscopy in which small incisions are made to remove the fat and the tissues.
Excision: It is another gynecomastia surgical procedure used to remove excess breast tissue and skin. This procedure becomes necessary when the nipples are to be re-positioned or areola is to be reduced with the aim of giving the breast a better contour.
Before approaching a cosmetic surgeon or making up one’s mind for gynecomastia surgery, there are some essential aspects that one must take into consideration like the techniques that one wants to go for, their advantages and disadvantages, the time one can spare from work, experience and qualification of the surgeon, reviews of the patients on whom surgeries are performed, surgery cost etc.
